STEP TIME PROCEDURE
Serve Preliminary 20-Day Notice (Private Work) Not later then 20 days after the claimant has first furnished labor, service, equipment, or materials to the jobsite. Claimant gives Notice prior to recording a mechanic's lien, filing a stop notice, or asserting a claim against a payment bond.
Record Notice of Completion
(Private Work)
Within 10 days of completion of work of improvement. Owner or his agent signs, verifies and records Notice in the County Recorder's Office.
Record Notice of Cessation
(Private Work)
After at least 30 days of continuous cessation of labor on the work of improvement. Owner or his agent signs, verifies and records Notice in the County Recorder's Office.
Record Claim of Lien
(Private Work)
Before the expiration of (a) 90 days after completion of the work of improvement, or (b) 60 days after recordation of a notice of completion or notice of cessation if claimant is the original contractor, or (c) 30 days if claimant is not the original contractor. Claimant records Claim in the County Recorder's Office.
Serve Stop Notice
(Private Work)
Prior to the expiration of the period within which claim of lien must be recorded. Claimant may serve stop notice on owner or construction lender, or bonded stop notice on construction lender.
Commence Action to Foreclose Lien
(Private Work)
Within 90 days after the recording of the claim of lien. Lien Claimant files suit to foreclose mechanic's lien; otherwise lien expires..

Action to Enforce Stop Notice
(Private Work)
After 10 days from service of stop notice and not later than 90 days following the expiration of the period within which claims of lien must be filed. Stop notice claimant files suit to enforce stop notice; otherwise, stop notice cease to be effective.

STEP TIME PROCEDURE
Serve Preliminary 20-Day Notice (Public Work) Not later then 20 days after the claimant has first furnished labor, service, equipment, or materials to the jobsite. Claimant gives Notice prior to filing a stop notice, or asserting a claim against a payment bond, by everyone except an original contractor. Notice must be served on the public entity.

Before the expiration of 30 days after recording of notice of completion (notice of acceptance) or notice of cessation of labor; otherwise 90 days of completion or cessation. Claimant may serve stop notice on public entity.

STEP TIME PROCEDURE
File Payment Bond
(Federal Work)
At time of entering contract for federal public work. Prime Contractor files payment bond for a percentage of contract price on any contract over $25,000.
Serve Notice of Claim
(Federal Work)
Within 90 days of the date material, equipment or supplies was last furnished or last labor performed. Materialmen, laborer and subcontractors who have no express or implied contractual relationship with the prime contractor, but who have a direct contractual relationship with a subcontractor give notice to the prime contractor.
Complaint on Payment Bond
(Federal Work)
Within one year of the date material, equipment or supplies were last furnished or last labor performed. Claimant files suit in U.S. District Court on payment bond.
